28-year-old confirms that he will be an Arsenal player next season

The signing of Alexandre Lacazette has been a real highlight of the last few months, whilst the retention of Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil stand the Gunners in good stead for next season.

There’s more good news for Arsenal today too, with David Ospina confirming his intention to remain at the club and play for them next season. According to the Sun, Ospina said: “I have a contract here, I’m happy and I’m going to fight to the end, I want to continue”.

This is significant as over the last few years, Ospina has rarely been a regular in the Arsenal first team. The dominance of Petr Cech has seen his opportunities diminish, and so he has been left with a bit-part role.

At 28-years-old, a lot of the fans in the Transfer Tavern had expected him to depart in order to close out his career as a first team regular. Instead, though, it appears as though if wants to battle it out with Petr Cech – and with the Czech Republic international now reaching the twilight of his career, there could well be an opening for Ospina.

Landlord’s Verdict

The role of a backup keeper is always going to be a difficult one to withstand, but it is very important.

As Cech grows older, he will be more prone to injury – and so it’s vital that Arsene Wenger has someone to fall back on that he can trust. Ospina is definitely that man.

In fact, on occasion, Ospina has outperformed Cech over the last few years – and so there is no doubting that he will be able to give his first team rival a run for his money next season.
