David Seaman explains why Alexandre Lacazette may struggle in the Premier League
Arsenal fans have seriously high hopes their marquee signing of the summer, Alexandre Lacazette.
The France international arrived from Lyon for a club-record £46.5 million fee earlier this month in a hugely important deal for Arsene Wenger.
The Gunners boss will be heavily reliant on his countryman to maintain his deadly eye for goal in England and fire them towards Premier League and Champions League contention.
Lacazette has got his Arsenal career off to a promising start with goals against Sydney FC and Sevilla – albeit only in pre-season friendlies.
But having struck 37 goals in 43 appearances for Lyon last season, the rapid striker provides plenty of cause for optimism around the Emirates ahead of the 2017-18 campaign.
Lacazette is set to get his first taste of ‘competitive’ action for the North Londoners when they face Chelsea in the Community Shield at Wembley next Sunday.
Like most of his teammates, the 26-year-old struggled to influence proceedings when Arsenal played the Blues in Beijing last weekend.
Having suffered a 3-0 loss to the only domestic opposition he has faced in an Arsenal shirt so far, Lacazette will be eager to prove he’s not out of his depth against the likes of Antonio Conte’s side.
One would be hard-pressed to find a Gunners fan who isn't excited to see him do just that, but not everyone is convinced he’s a natural fit for the English top-flight.
David Seaman recognises the potential Lacazette has within him to take the Premier League by storm, yet insists he may need time to find his feet.
"It will be difficult for him to get used to the Premier League," the former Arsenal and England goalkeeper told Goal.
"A lot of new signings find it difficult to settle because they don’t realise how fast and how physical it is, and how fast the games come round.
"Sometimes you’re playing two or three times a week. He will get used to it – from what I’ve seen he does look quality.”
LACAZETTE'S STRENGTHS
Although Lacazette certainly has the pace to match even the quickest Premier League speedsters, will it be enough to see him emulate some of the greatest Arsenal players of all-time?
Some even believe he boasts shades of Arsenal legend Ian Wright – a comparison Seaman considers to be unwarranted at this stage.
"People said he reminds them of Ian Wright, but he has to score a few more goals to remind me of him!"
