Steven Gerrard sends clear message to Arsene Wenger after Arsenal loss

Steven Gerrard explains what he thinks is wrong at Arsenal after Saturday's 1-0 loss to Stoke City

Steven Gerrard has told Arsene Wenger that Arsenal are too “weak” to win the Premier League title this season.

The Gunners suffered an early blow to their title hopes on Saturday when they were beaten 1-0 by Stoke City at the bet365 Stadium.

Stoke’s summer signing Jese ended up scoring the only goal of the game shortly after half-time as Arsenal dominated possession but failed to find the back of the net.

Gerrard feels that the Gunners showed a lack of steel against the Potters as they slumped to a disappointing defeat in just their second game of the season.

Speaking on BT Sport after the game, Gerrard bluntly said: “It’s just weak defending.

“To be a top team and to compete for this Premier League, you have to be really good in possession, and Arsenal are – they’re a fantastic team.

“But to be a top, top side, you have to compete out of possession. You have to be horrible to play against. Arsenal are too easy to play against.”

Arsenal must now look to bounce back as they take the week to prepare for their crunch clash against Liverpool at Anfield next weekend.

The Gunners will be hoping to challenge for the Premier League title this season after they finished in a disappointing fifth place last term.

Arsenal will have to make do with Europa League football this term, with the group stage set to get under way next month.

The north London side have not won the Premier League title since their famous unbeaten triumph in the 2003-04 season.
